Kevin Murphy co-founded Brentwood Capital Advisors, an investment banking firm that specializes in health care and information technology sectors, after four years at SunTrust Equitable Securities. There, he served as managing director of the investment banking group and head of the private capital group. He previously managed the capital markets group at Wachovia Corp. in Atlanta.
What is the most outside-of-the-box idea you have ever had in your professional career? Leaving a secure, well-paying position with SunTrust Equitable Securities to start Brentwood Capital with Jim Cooper, Nick Carteaux and another associate at the end of 1999. We were fortunate enough to have Tom Wylly join us late in 2001 as we made our first real foray in the health care sector.

What was the result? We survived the 2000 Internet bubble, the crash of 2008 and the Great Recession, and now have a great team comprised of 11 professionals who are recognized as some of the leading investment bankers in health care services and information technology sectors.
What single thing makes your organization stand out? [We are] a team of senior investment bankers that are owners with deep industry knowledge and extensive transaction experience committed to providing objective, solution-agnostic mergers and acquisition and capital-raising advice.
What does your organization have in the works for 2014? Identify and hire more industry-focused senior investment bankers, finish investing our initial private equity fund, Brentwood Capital Partners LPI, and begin raising our next fund.How did you wind up in your current position? I was one of the founders of the firm and was the only partner with significant management experience. … No one has voted me off the island yet, but I occasionally see people walking the halls with those tiki torches.
What makes an effective business leader? A vision for the business, the courage to execute the plan, the ability to communicate it and the capacity to inspire the team to achieve their goals.
